For eligible homeowners participating in the Connecticut program, the Stepwise Tap device and standard Stepwise Tap installation are provided at no cost through the program.
If you are also installing a new EV charger or need additional electrical work beyond the Stepwise Tap installation, your electrician will provide a separate quote for that work. The program covers the Stepwise Tap device and its installation, but it does not automatically cover the cost of a new EV charger, charger installation, panel repairs, trenching, service upgrades, or other unrelated electrical work. Your utility may offer additional rebates for your EV charger installation. Check out the following links to evaluate your eligibility for those programs:

This program is funded through a portion of the Public Benefits charge paid by utility customers, which supports the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority’s Innovative Energy Solutions program.
The goal is to accelerate EV adoption and home electrification in Connecticut by removing one of the biggest barriers homeowners face: limited electrical capacity. Many homes are told they may need a costly panel or service upgrade before installing an EV charger, even when smarter load management can help the home use its existing electrical capacity more efficiently.
By providing Stepwise Tap through the program, eligible homeowners can access a practical solution that helps make home EV charging more affordable and accessible. The program also helps improve and streamline access to managed charging, which allows EV charging to better align with grid needs over time.
In short, the program exists to help more Connecticut households get access to home charging, reduce unnecessary infrastructure costs, and support a cleaner, more flexible electric grid.
