Free Smart Load Manager Program for Connecticut EV Owners
Stepwise Tap™ - Get fast charging with any charger brand, skip the electric panel upgrade
Connecticut homeowners can now receive a free Stepwise Tap™ Load Manager device, enabling Level 2 EV charging without a costly electrical panel upgrade.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 1, 2026, Connecticut - Stepwise Electric today announced that Eversource and United Illuminating (UI), a subsidiary of Avangrid, Inc., customers are eligible for a rebate program covering the full cost and professional installation of the Stepwise Tap Load Manager device. The program enables EV owners to add Level 2 charging capacity to their homes without the expense of an electrical panel upgrade, a barrier that can add thousands of dollars to EV charger installations. The Stepwise Tap works with all EV charger and vehicle brands and enables these households to enroll in managed charging programs offered by their utility.
The Stepwise Tap is a smart load management device that sits between a home's electrical panel and its appliances, intelligently optimizing energy use. Rather than upgrading a panel, which can cost homeowners $4,000–$10,000 or more, the Stepwise Tap allows homeowners to add a Level 2 EV charger, heat pump, induction stove, hot tub, or other high-draw appliance within their existing electrical infrastructure.
“This program removes one of the biggest obstacles standing between Connecticut homeowners and electrification. For years, the cost of a panel upgrade has forced families to delay or abandon EV charging and other electric upgrades. By participating in a program with Eversource and UI to cover the Stepwise Tap device and installation, we’re making it easier for Connecticut homeowners to go electric today, access fast EV charging, and increase enrollment in managed charging. We’re proud to be part of a program that moves the needle on clean energy adoption in a real, tangible way while supporting a resilient grid.” Jane Chen, CEO, Stepwise Electric, Inc.
What the Program Offers

• Access to additional savings through Eversource and UI managed charging programs
