Stepwise Portal Terms & Conditions

These Portal Terms & Conditions (“Portal Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Stepwise portal, webapp, account tools, device registration tools, commissioning tools, dashboards, support features, integrations, and related online services operated by Stepwise Electric, Inc. (“Stepwise,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) athttps://portal.getstepwiseapi.com/ and any related services that link to these Portal Terms (collectively, the “Portal”).These Portal Terms apply to homeowners, installers, contractors, trade partners, and other authorized users who access or use the Portal.By creating an account, accessing the Portal, registering a device, commissioning a device, connecting a device to the internet, using a dashboard, enabling an integration, requesting support, or otherwise using the Portal, you agree to these Portal Terms.If you do not agree to these Portal Terms, do not use the Portal.
1. Relationship to Other Stepwise Policies
These Portal Terms apply to use of the Portal. They do not replace other Stepwise policies or agreements that may apply to your purchase, product, installation, website use, warranty, return, refund, utility program participation, or other Stepwise services.The following policies are incorporated by reference where applicable:Stepwise Privacy Policy: https://getstepwise.com/privacyStepwise Website Terms of Use: https://www.getstepwise.com/terms-of-serviceStepwise Return & Refund Policy: https://getstepwise.com/return-policyStepwise Limited Warranty:https://www.getstepwise.com/warrantyIf there is a conflict between these Portal Terms and the Stepwise Limited Warranty, the Limited Warranty will govern solely with respect to warranty coverage for the applicable Stepwise product.
2. About the Portal
The Portal allows authorized users to register, connect, commission, monitor, support, and manage certain Stepwise products, including the Stepwise Tap™.Depending on your account type, Portal features may include:Creating a homeowner or installer account;Adding one or more Stepwise Tap devices to an account;Registering a device by serial number;Connecting a Stepwise Tap to the internet;Completing commissioning steps;Identifying the appliance or load connected to the Stepwise Tap;Entering contact information, zip code, address where provided, company information, role, and other account information;Viewing device information, device status, and energy data;Viewing home energy usage, load, and capacity information;Uploading installation photos;Assigning devices to customers;Requesting support;Enabling supported integrations, such as compatible EV charger, vehicle, or charging platform integrations;Participating in utility, incentive, pilot, demand response, managed charging, or similar programs where separately offered and consented to.Stepwise may modify, add, remove, suspend, or discontinue Portal features at any time.
3. Account Types
Homeowners
A “Homeowner” is a person who owns, occupies, manages, or is otherwise authorized to access information related to a home where a Stepwise Tap is installed or intended to be installed.Homeowners may use the Portal to add or register devices, provide contact information, identify the connected appliance or load, provide zip code or address information, connect the device to the internet, view device information and energy data, request support, and enable supported integrations or programs.
Installers
An “Installer” is a contractor, electrician, HVAC installer, plumber, trade professional, company representative, distributor, or other authorized person or organization that uses the Portal in connection with installation, commissioning, support, service, troubleshooting, customer assignment, or related activities involving Stepwise products.Installers may use the Portal to create accounts, provide role and company information, commission devices, upload installation photos, assign devices to customers, view device status, support customers, and access information made available to them through the Portal.An Installer does not need to be an electrician in all cases, but each Installer is responsible for ensuring that any electrical work is performed by properly licensed and qualified professionals in accordance with applicable laws, codes, permitting requirements, inspection requirements, utility requirements, and authority having jurisdiction requirements.
4. Account Information and Security
You agree to provide accurate, current, and complete information when creating an account, registering a device, commissioning a device, submitting customer information, enabling an integration, or otherwise using the Portal.You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. You agree not to share your login credentials or allow unauthorized users to access the Portal through your account.You agree to notify Stepwise promptly if you believe your account has been compromised or used without authorization.Stepwise may suspend, revoke, restrict, or terminate account access if we believe an account has been misused, accessed without authorization, used in violation of these Portal Terms, used in a manner that creates security or safety risk, or used in a manner that may harm Stepwise, customers, Installers, partners, or others.
5. Device Registration and Device Claims
A Stepwise Tap may be added to one or more accounts by entering or associating the device serial number or other identifying information.In some cases, the same Stepwise Tap may be claimed or accessed by both a Homeowner and an Installer. Access may depend on account role, device assignment, consent, support status, installation status, or other factors determined by Stepwise.Stepwise reserves the right to verify ownership, installation status, device assignment, customer authorization, Installer authorization, or other relevant information before granting, continuing, modifying, suspending, reassigning, or revoking access to a Stepwise Tap or related data.If there is a dispute or uncertainty regarding account access, device ownership, customer authorization, Installer access, or device assignment, Stepwise may, in its discretion, investigate, request additional information, reassign device access, suspend access, revoke access, or take other steps we believe are appropriate to protect customers, Installers, Stepwise, device security, or system integrity.
6. Connecting a Device to the Internet
The Portal may allow a Homeowner or Installer to connect a Stepwise Tap to the internet by entering Wi-Fi credentials or otherwise configuring network access.By connecting a Stepwise Tap to the internet, you represent that you are authorized to use the applicable network and authorize the Stepwise Tap to connect to that network and transmit data bidirectionally between the device and Stepwise systems.This bidirectional communication may include:Reading device status, telemetry, usage, capacity, and diagnostic information from the Stepwise Tap;Sending commands, settings, updates, diagnostic requests, or other communications to the Stepwise Tap;Supporting device registration and commissioning;Supporting dashboards and energy data display;Supporting troubleshooting, debugging, support, and maintenance;Supporting firmware updates and software updates;Supporting compatible integrations, including connected EV chargers, vehicles, or charging platforms where enabled;Supporting utility, pilot, managed charging, demand response, or similar programs where separately authorized.Wi-Fi or internet connectivity is not required for all basic Stepwise Tap functionality. However, certain Portal features, dashboards, support tools, firmware updates, troubleshooting capabilities, utility programs, EV charger controls, vehicle integrations, modulation controls, and other connected features may require Wi-Fi, internet access, cloud connectivity, or third-party service availability.You are responsible for providing and maintaining any internet service, Wi-Fi network, router, modem, device, account, or third-party service needed to use connected features.
7. Firmware, Software, and Over-the-Air Updates
Stepwise may provide firmware, software, configuration, security, diagnostic, or feature updates for the Portal, Stepwise Tap, or related services.By using the Portal or connecting a Stepwise Tap to the internet, you authorize Stepwise to send and install updates, including automatic over-the-air updates, without separate notice or additional consent, where such updates are used to improve performance, add features, address bugs, improve security, support compatibility, support debugging, or maintain proper operation.Certain updates may be required to continue using connected features, dashboards, integrations, support tools, or program functionality.
8. Energy Data and Dashboards
The Portal may provide Homeowners with access to energy data, device status, usage information, capacity information, and related dashboard features.This information may help Homeowners understand home electrical usage, evaluate available capacity, consider future electrical loads, support troubleshooting, and better understand how the Stepwise Tap is operating.Energy data, capacity information, and dashboard information are provided for informational purposes only. They may not be complete, real-time, error-free, or suitable as the sole basis for electrical, engineering, installation, code, permitting, inspection, safety, rebate, utility, or financial decisions.You should consult qualified professionals before making decisions about adding appliances, modifying electrical systems, installing equipment, claiming incentives, or relying on dashboard data for any technical or compliance purpose.
9. Installer Commissioning Responsibilities
Installers may use the Portal to commission Stepwise Tap devices, upload installation photos, assign devices to customers, and submit installation or customer information.Installers are responsible for:Providing accurate and complete commissioning information;Confirming that installation information submitted through the Portal is accurate;Uploading only photos and information they are authorized to provide;Ensuring they have permission to submit customer, homeowner, device, installation, or property information;Ensuring any electrical work is performed by properly licensed and qualified professionals where required;Complying with applicable electrical codes, building codes, permitting requirements, inspection requirements, utility requirements, manufacturer instructions, and authority having jurisdiction requirements;Using professional judgment on a home-by-home and project-by-project basis;Following Stepwise documentation, installation manuals, commissioning instructions, and support guidance;Not misrepresenting Stepwise products, certifications, capabilities, warranty coverage, rebate eligibility, or program eligibility.Installers acknowledge that the Portal is a tool to support commissioning, documentation, troubleshooting, and support. The Portal is not a substitute for professional judgment, proper installation, code compliance, permitting, inspection, or safe electrical work.
10. Physical Configuration and Safety Settings
Certain Stepwise Tap configuration settings, including settings related to panel size, breaker size, or other electrical safety parameters, may be configured physically on the device and cannot be changed through the Portal.This design is intended to help safeguard the electrical safety of the home and ensure that critical electrical configuration is set through appropriate installation procedures.Installers and other qualified professionals are responsible for confirming that any physical configuration settings are correctly set for the specific installation and comply with Stepwise documentation and applicable requirements.The Portal should not be used to bypass, override, or substitute for required physical configuration, installation steps, inspections, or electrical safety procedures.
11. Homeowner Consent to Share Device Information with Installer
A Homeowner may authorize Stepwise to share device information, installation information, device status, energy usage data, and related support information with the Installer associated with the device.This consent is intended to allow the Installer to assist with commissioning, remote support, troubleshooting, diagnostics, customer service, and related installation or service activities.Homeowner consent to share device information with an Installer should be collected through a separate, clear consent checkbox or similar affirmative action in the Portal. This consent should not be hidden solely in these Portal Terms.If a Homeowner provides this consent, Stepwise may make relevant device and energy information available to the Installer through the Portal or other support channels.Homeowners may contact Stepwise to request that Installer access be reviewed, changed, or revoked, subject to technical, support, contractual, program, or legal limitations.Stepwise may also review, modify, suspend, or revoke Installer access where we believe it is appropriate to protect customer privacy, safety, security, system integrity, or proper operation of the Services.
12. Support, Troubleshooting, and Notes
The Portal may allow Homeowners and Installers to request support, submit information, view support status, upload files, provide troubleshooting information, or access support tickets and notes.Stepwise may use information submitted through the Portal, device data, installation information, photos, support history, diagnostics, and other information to provide support, troubleshoot issues, improve products, verify warranty claims, and operate our business.In the future, Stepwise may make certain troubleshooting tickets, notes, support records, or diagnostic information visible to Installers where relevant to commissioning, support, troubleshooting, or customer service and where permitted by the Homeowner, applicable law, or Stepwise policy.
13. Connected Equipment, EV Controls, and Third-Party Integrations
The Portal may allow Homeowners to enable integrations with compatible connected equipment, vehicles, EV chargers, charging platforms, utility systems, or other third-party services.If you enable a supported integration, you authorize Stepwise to exchange information with the applicable third-party service and to send commands or control signals where needed to provide the requested functionality.Depending on the integration and configuration, Stepwise may send control commands to connected EV chargers, vehicles, charging platforms, or related equipment. These commands may include commands to start, stop, pause, resume, modulate, limit, schedule, or otherwise manage charging or load behavior.Third-party services, equipment, vehicles, chargers, platforms, APIs, internet services, and utility systems are not controlled by Stepwise. Stepwise does not guarantee that any third-party integration will be available, error-free, secure, uninterrupted, compatible, or continue to operate in the future.Stepwise is not responsible for failures, delays, unavailability, errors, security issues, or changes caused by third-party services, equipment, APIs, vehicles, chargers, platforms, utilities, internet service providers, or other third parties.
14. Utility Programs and Separate Consent
The Portal may allow Homeowners to enroll in or participate in utility, incentive, rebate, pilot, grid services, demand response, managed charging, measurement and verification, or similar programs.Participation in any such program may require separate enrollment, eligibility confirmation, consent, data-sharing authorization, program terms, or utility-specific terms.Stepwise will not share Homeowner data with utilities or program partners for utility program participation unless the Homeowner provides separate consent, enrolls in a program that requires such sharing, or such sharing is otherwise permitted or required by law.Program eligibility, incentives, rebates, payments, enrollment, performance requirements, utility approval, and program availability are not guaranteed and may be determined by utilities, program administrators, regulators, or other third parties.
15. Warranty Registration and Product Documentation
Completing device registration, setup, Wi-Fi connection, commissioning, or related steps through the Portal may be required to activate or maintain warranty coverage, as described in the applicable Stepwise Limited Warranty.The Stepwise Limited Warranty is available at:https://www.getstepwise.com/warrantyStepwise products must be installed, configured, used, serviced, and maintained in accordance with applicable product documentation, installation manuals, commissioning instructions, warranty terms, laws, codes, standards, utility requirements, and authority having jurisdiction requirements.
16. No Guarantees
Stepwise may provide tools, products, dashboards, data, recommendations, estimates, integrations, and support intended to help users understand home electrical usage, manage certain loads, support electrification, and evaluate potential alternatives to panel or service upgrades.However, Stepwise does not guarantee:That any home, project, or customer will avoid a panel upgrade or service upgrade;That any installation will pass inspection;That any permit, rebate, incentive, utility program, or grant-funded offering will be available or approved;That any specific installation cost, savings, energy savings, bill savings, incentive amount, or financial outcome will be achieved;That energy data, capacity information, or dashboard information will be complete, current, accurate, or error-free;That any connected appliance, EV charger, vehicle, platform, or third-party integration will operate without interruption;That charging, heating, appliance operation, or load management will be uninterrupted;That the Portal, dashboards, notifications, integrations, or connected features will be available at all times.
17. No Critical Use or Emergency Use
The Portal, dashboards, notifications, Stepwise Tap, integrations, and connected features are not emergency response systems, life safety systems, medical systems, fire detection systems, security systems, or substitutes for professional monitoring, inspection, maintenance, or emergency response.You should not rely on the Portal, dashboards, notifications, device data, or connected features for life safety, emergency response, medical needs, fire protection, security, or other critical purposes.Stepwise does not dispatch emergency services.
18. Privacy and Data Use
Stepwise’s collection, use, sharing, and protection of personal information is described in the Stepwise Privacy Policy.
By using the Portal, you acknowledge that Stepwise may collect, use, and share information as described in the Privacy Policy and these Portal Terms.
Stepwise may use personal information, device information, installation information, energy data, support information, and related information to provide the Portal, operate and support Stepwise products, troubleshoot issues, provide dashboards, improve products and services, develop new features, support utility programs with consent, verify warranty claims, maintain security, and operate our business.
Stepwise may also use aggregated, anonymized, or de-identified information for product improvement, analytics, research, reporting, benchmarking, grant reporting, utility reporting, market analysis, and business purposes, in accordance with the Privacy Policy and applicable law.
19. User Content and Uploaded Materials
The Portal may allow users to upload or submit information, photos, files, notes, support requests, installation materials, customer information, commissioning information, device information, or other content (“User Content”).
You represent and warrant that you have all rights, permissions, and authorizations necessary to submit User Content to Stepwise through the Portal.
You grant Stepwise a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, host, store, reproduce, process, display, transmit, modify, and share User Content as needed to provide the Portal, support Stepwise products, provide customer service, troubleshoot issues, verify installation, administer accounts, improve products and services, comply with law, and operate our business.
Stepwise will handle personal information contained in User Content in accordance with the Privacy Policy.
20. Acceptable Use
You agree not to use the Portal to:
Violate any applicable law, regulation, code, permit, inspection requirement, utility requirement, or third-party right;
Submit false, misleading, inaccurate, fraudulent, or unauthorized information;
Claim, assign, or access a device without authorization;
Access or attempt to access another person’s account, device, data, or customer information without authorization;
Misrepresent your role, company, license status, authorization, customer relationship, installation status, or relationship with Stepwise;
Interfere with or disrupt the Portal, Stepwise systems, devices, networks, or services;
Attempt to bypass safety features, physical configuration requirements, security controls, access controls, or usage limits;
Upload viruses, malware, harmful code, or unlawful content;
Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive source code from any Stepwise software, firmware, or systems except where such restriction is prohibited by law;
Use the Portal for unlawful, unsafe, harmful, abusive, or unauthorized purposes.
21. Suspension and Termination
Stepwise may suspend, restrict, revoke, or terminate access to the Portal, an account, a device, an Installer account, a Homeowner account, a feature, an integration, or any related service at any time if Stepwise believes that:
You have violated these Portal Terms;
You have provided false, inaccurate, misleading, or unauthorized information;
You have misused the Portal or Stepwise systems;
You have created a safety, privacy, security, legal, operational, or support risk;
Your access is disputed or cannot be verified;
Your access may compromise a customer, Installer, device, home, system, or Stepwise service;
Stepwise is required or permitted to do so by law, contract, utility program requirements, or other applicable obligations.
Stepwise may also suspend, restrict, or discontinue Portal features, integrations, or services for maintenance, security, updates, business reasons, or other operational needs.
22. Intellectual Property
The Portal, software, firmware, dashboards, interfaces, designs, documentation, content, trademarks, logos, service marks, product names, and related materials are owned by Stepwise or its licensors and are protected by intellectual property and other laws.
Subject to these Portal Terms, Stepwise grants you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access and use the Portal solely for authorized purposes.
You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, sublicense, reverse engineer, create derivative works from, or otherwise exploit the Portal, software, firmware, documentation, or Stepwise materials except as expressly permitted by Stepwise or applicable law.
23. Feedback
If you provide ideas, suggestions, comments, recommendations, or feedback regarding Stepwise, the Portal, Stepwise products, or Stepwise services, you agree that Stepwise may use such feedback without restriction or compensation to you.
24. Disclaimers
The Portal and related services are provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis.To the fullest extent permitted by law, Stepwise disclaims all warranties, express or implied, regarding the Portal, dashboards, integrations, data, support tools, and related services, including warranties of accuracy, reliability, availability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement.The Stepwise Tap may be covered by a separate Limited Warranty. Except as expressly provided in the applicable Limited Warranty, Stepwise disclaims all warranties regarding Stepwise products to the fullest extent permitted by law.
25. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Stepwise and its officers, directors, employees, contractors, agents, affiliates, suppliers, service providers, and licensors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, business opportunity, energy savings, incentive value, utility program value, or other intangible losses arising out of or relating to the Portal, Stepwise products, connected equipment, third-party services, integrations, or these Portal Terms.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Stepwise’s total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the Portal or these Portal Terms will not exceed one hundred dollars ($100), except to the extent a different remedy is expressly provided under the applicable Stepwise Limited Warranty for a covered warranty claim.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability, so some limitations may not apply to you.
26. Indemnification
To the fullest extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Stepwise and its officers, directors, employees, contractors, agents, affiliates, suppliers, service providers, and licensors from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, arising out of or relating to:
Your use of the Portal;
Your violation of these Portal Terms;
Your violation of applicable law;
Your violation of any third-party rights;
Your User Content;
Your installation, commissioning, service, support, or troubleshooting activities;
Your unauthorized access to or use of any device, account, customer information, or Portal feature;
Your misrepresentation of any installation, customer relationship, company role, license status, program eligibility, rebate eligibility, or relationship with Stepwise.
27. Changes to the Portal or Portal Terms
Stepwise may modify, suspend, or discontinue the Portal or any Portal feature at any time.
Stepwise may also update these Portal Terms from time to time. If we update these Portal Terms, we will post the updated version through the Portal or otherwise make it available. Your continued use of the Portal after updated Portal Terms are posted means you accept the updated Portal Terms.
28. Governing Law
These Portal Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to conflict of law principles.
Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Portal Terms or the Portal will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Delaware, unless otherwise required by applicable law.
